Who We Are

The Friends of the Truman Foundation is the nonprofit partner of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Friends of Truman raises private donations and support for the operations and activities of the Truman Foundation, including programs and fellowships for Truman Scholars and those committed to public service.

We offer events, programming, mentoring, and other opportunities to those who are working to build the next generation of public service leaders in an increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

Supporting the Presidential Memorial to Public Service

Since 1975, the Harry S. Truman Scholarship has relied almost exclusively on the proceeds of a small trust established by Congress that must be invested in Treasuries. Since 2002, the annual yield on Treasuries has declined by more than 79%. The original value of the scholarship in 1977 covered the full average annual cost of tuition, room, and board.  However, the cost of higher education has increased in excess of 500% since 1977, such that the current value of the scholarship fails to cover even the cost of tuition alone for graduate study.

With limited resources, the Harry S. Truman Scholarship has been unable to increase its scholarship for graduate school or expand programming to benefit Scholars and our Friends committed to public service.

Friends of the Truman Foundation is undertaking an ambitious campaign to fund and endow programs that benefit Truman Scholars and our Friends.
